Legend has it that during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), Emperor Wanli fell seriously ill. The emperor’s condition continued to worsen until a group of travellers stumbled upon his palace. These travellers were the cultivators of the tea gardens in the Wuyi Mountains. They presented the emperor with
a special tea made from leaves picked from ancient tea trees growing on the rocky cliffs of the mountains.
The emperor consumed the tea and experienced a miraculous recovery. As a
gesture of gratitude, he awarded the tea bushes with red robes.
